Reviving History: Yango Starry Bay Sales Center

Yu Chao and Guanghui Zeng's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Ancient Porcelain Kilns

Located in Quanzhou City, China, the Yango Starry Bay project is a unique blend of historical inspiration and modern design. The project, a sales center for a new construction development, takes its cues from the city's rich history as a porcelain production hub. Designers Yu Chao and Guanghui Zeng have deconstructed and reassembled elements of traditional porcelain kilns, integrating them into a modern space that resonates with local culture.

The standout feature of this design is its use of the "brick" and "arch" elements. These elements not only give the space a distinct rhythm but also connect it to the local history and culture. The designers have used materials such as brick, waterstone, bronze drawing stainless steel, and latex paint to bring their vision to life. Covering an area of 540 square meters, the project is a testament to the designers' ability to blend form and function seamlessly.

Yango Starry Bay serves as a sales office, helping customers understand the new buildings and houses in the development. It offers a comprehensive view of the construction plan and provides a space for potential buyers to interact with sales managers. The design of the space is intended to facilitate these interactions while also immersing visitors in the rich cultural history of the area.

The project, located in Dehua City, Fujian Province, China, took approximately two months to complete. The designers undertook extensive research into the traditional porcelain kiln culture of Dehua City, current design trends in oriental culture, and the impact of cultural elements on the consumption economy. This research informed the design process and helped the designers create a space that is both functional and culturally significant.

One of the main challenges the designers faced was understanding the local culture before initiating the design. They spent a significant amount of time studying the culture and characteristics of Dehua City. The result is a design that deconstructs the art of ancient porcelain kilns, simplifies and captures historical and cultural elements, and incorporates them into the space. The use of red bricks as an art unit creates a rhythm and formal beauty that is both simple and profound.

The Yango Starry Bay project was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The award is a testament to the designers' ability to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, and that resonates with the local culture.
